We’re excited to announce that Element Brooklyn has been featured on Shopify’s blog for utilizing the e-commerce platform’s smart order routing tool. Smart order routing helps us maximize logistical efficiency while minimizing our carbon footprint.
What is smart order routing?
It is a logistics system that automatically designates where orders should be fulfilled. Based on several predetermined rules, it assigns orders to either our headquarters in Brooklyn, or our West Coast fulfillment center in Tempe, Arizona.
The system assigns orders to the best fulfillment location based on distance to the destination and current stock. It will shift orders to another location when items are unavailable and avoids splitting orders between both locations.
Before smart order routing, if a product was out of stock at one location customers from that region would be prevented from checking out until we manually accepted the order, causing delays and missed orders.
The system helps us to get orders to customers faster, saving money, labor and reducing our carbon footprint, all while making it easier to grow the business. Shipping is our number one expense so reducing shipping costs is crucial.
Smart order routing has benefited us in several ways:
